Junior Sailing Program Outline

  •

    • Basic
      knot-tying skills
:   The students will learn several of the important "sailing knots" such as
the square knot, bowline and figure-eight knot.
Also, the ability to tie onto a dock or motorboat will be learned.

    • Boating
      Safety
:   Students will learn the many aspects of boating safety such as
the ability to rite a boat that has been capsized; what to do when
dangerous situations arise; and most importantly learn to always wear a
life jacket when near or in the water.

    • “Rigging” the boat:
Students will be taught both how to put together and take
apart a small sailboat. They will learn boat parts and terminology.  Sometime during the class they
might also be able to sail on a bigger “keel boat.”

    • Being able to sail on any point of sail
By the end of the session students will learn to sail in any direction relative to the wind.
They will learn how to tack, jibe, points of sail and right-of-way rules.
They will sail around courses set in the cove for their learning.

    • Class
      Requirements:
In order to be enrolled in the sailing class, the
students must complete a swim test the first day of class--be able to swim
25 yards (the length of the pool) and tread water for 3 minutes.

    • What
      to bring:
A student should bring the following items to class:

      • A swim suit and towel
      • Warm clothing/shorts [weather can change quickly]
      • Windbreaker
      • Wetsuit
        is recommended
      • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
      • Closed-toe
        shoes or “aqua socks”
      • Water/ snack [very important]
      • Life
        jacket will be provided

    • How to have fun!
    •             Besides safety, fun will be the most important subject taught in the sailing
class. If a student enjoys sailing, they are encouraged to come back for
more than one week. A sailor can always continue learning regardless of
how long they have been sailing, but more importantly they can continue
                  having fun!
